Why Handmade Leather Bags Cost More
A finished leather bag can make the work behind it look deceptively simple.
That is usually a sign that the work was done well.
The cost of a handmade bag is not tied to one dramatic step. It comes from a long series of decisions—many of them made before the first stitch is sewn.
It Starts with the Hide
Leather is not uniform yardage. One hide can contain shifts in grain, firmness, stretch, and natural markings.
Before cutting, the maker has to decide where each pattern piece belongs. A section that works beautifully for the body of a bag may be wrong for a strap. That judgment affects how the finished piece looks and performs.
Then Come the Small Steps
Cutting is only the beginning.
Depending on the bag, there may be skiving, marking, edge preparation, stitching, hardware installation, and several rounds of finishing. An edge may be sanded and burnished more than once. A panel that is slightly off may be recut rather than persuaded into place.
No single step explains the price. Together, they explain the time.
Scale Changes the Math
Large factories are built around efficiency. Labor is divided, materials are standardized, and machinery reduces the time spent on each unit.
A small workshop works differently. The same person may handle a piece from hide selection through final inspection. That creates a short feedback loop, but it also means more skilled time is present in each bag.
Handmade Should Be More Than a Story
There is plenty of romance around handmade goods. We think the result should still be judged plainly.
Is the material right for the design? Are the stress points considered? Is the hardware dependable? Are the edges finished with care? Can the bag be addressed if something eventually wears?
Handmade is not a guarantee of quality. It simply gives the maker more opportunities to make good decisions.
At PERSISTENCE
PERSISTENCE leather goods are designed and constructed in our Upstate New York studio. We keep production in-house and work in small batches or make to order.
Our leather comes primarily from Wickett & Craig in Pennsylvania, Horween in Chicago, and Conceria Tempesti in Tuscany.
Most of the work disappears into the finished bag. A strap should sit correctly without announcing the reinforcement beneath it. An edge should feel smooth without asking how many passes it took to get there.
When comparing prices, compare more than silhouettes. Ask about the leather, construction, hardware, finishing, and repairability. A higher price should have a concrete explanation.
